itty bitty living space

#2 Display things that you love AND are useful. Our bikes look like masterpieces in here. It helps that we keep our bikes close to the door too.

Speaking like Russians only in summer

Yesterday I said No to this. That's will power at it's finest.
And after a hectic day at work Rachel and I said YES to a sister date.(the russian thing by the way is what Rachel and I do periodically).

When this happened I was proud of myself for passing up on the donut. Donut you think  I should be?

ALSO did you notice my pictures are way better quality? I took the plunge and bought a fresh new camera.

Blue

This is Blue.
He likes to hang out in my parents front yard.
Before work the other day I got these pictures. My Mom and Dad call him Blue. Apparently when my dad is hot-tub-ing Blue comes over and says hello.

Running!

Last fall my voice teacher asked me if I wanted to run a 5k with her. the night before I was creating a bucket list for myself and decided that one day I'd like to run a 5k. (I wanted to keep my goal attainable). I'm a big fan of the blog Making it lovely and she had promised on her blog that if any opportunity came up that could help her reach her goal she would take it! So when my teacher asked if I wanted to run it, I couldn't say no. So I downloaded the couch to 5k app and started my journey. I ran another 5k with my sister in law this spring. After running (more like jogging) it I decided to push myself even more! So this summer I'm training for my first 10k in the fall! My goal is eventually to run a marathon but I like the idea of taking it step by step. Here are the #mileaday pictures I've been taking recently.

Puppy love

Barney (the dog we rescued a couple of weeks ago) is healthy, and loved. The first time Matt and I rescued a dog the humane society took him so fast I didn't even get to say goodbye. Luckily this time we found Barney a home of someone who can send us a pictures every once in a while. I only knew this little guy for a few hours but he stole a that puppy part of my heart.

Listen to the Mustn'ts

I love "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein. Sometimes I like to flip to a random poem and read it dramatically to Matt. He usually looks at me and shakes his head. I intended on practicing my Ukelele today but instead I wrote music to my favorite poem. Enjoy!

LISTEN TO THE MUSTN'TS
Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.

How to live in an itty bitty living space!

When Matt and I made the leap to get married in 2011, we had the hardest time finding a place to live. The bay area is one of the most expensive places in the world to live but we both needed to finish school at SJSU. At the time Matt was working at Chipotle and taking gigs and I was traveling teaching piano, voice and had just started teaching from my parents house. It seemed impossible to find a place to live.  We looked at backyard cottages, indoor apartments, trailers, you name it. We applied to many and kept getting rejected because of our work situations. We didn't make triple rent, we only made double.  ): We finally found a place that accepted us and it had hardwood floors!!! It was our little studio we live in now. I never thought I could live in a studio but we have survived and thrived here for almost 2 years.
Many people walk into our place and say, "How do you fit your life in this tiny space?" or "Two people live here?". These comments made me decide to start the series How to live in an itty bitty living  space.

1. Get light colored curtains to let in lots of natural light. (neutral bedding doesn't hurt either).
We started off with dark red curtains to go along with our really busy zebra striped comforter. Dark curtains block out the light, and light makes you happy, and wake up easier. So last year we ditched the dark ones and got some really plain neutral colored curtains. It literally immediately changed the mood in our space.

Good Better Best

I love making lists, but I have a bad habit of creating the list and organizing my thoughts and then NOT following through. I read all kinds of blogs on how to prioritize and keep motivated but one way or another I seem to let the 'good' things get in the way of the 'best' things.

This talk sums that concept up for me.

I need to be a supportive wife; a more understanding listener. Rachel told me about a quote she heard that went something like, "Don't listen to respond, listen to understand."

I need to pass my classes this summer. Taking an online philosophy class and a three day a week public speaking class should be completely in my grasp.

This summer I want to gain control over my body. (Notice I used the word gain and not loose)

I want to finish the couch to 10k program (awesome free app) this summer. It's 14 weeks, and I've got the time.

I want to learn to water color.

I want to play my ukelele.

I want to read my scriptures.

Today I ran and I ate like a champ! My class starts in a week, so excuse me while I learn to water color as I listen to my sweetheart practice. One step at a time.

rolling stones

I was sitting in the audience of the rolling stones concert. It was incredible. Rock and Roll Icons right before my eyes. Mick is dancing pointing right at me and yells "JEN! It's your turn!" I shake my head in disbelief. This cannot be real. I'm taken on stage and then I sing and the whole audience chants my name. And then I wake up. Because, this is too weird to be true.

but some of it was true.

and the whole time the real concert was going on it felt unbelievable.

Cameras were not allowed backstage, or on stage during rehearsal. so the only proof I have that I was that close to mic is this.

I'm the one who is dancing a little to excited.

I do have pics of the first half of the concert though.
